Promoting healthy vocal technique, authentic expression, and love of music!
With a background in classical music & opera, and as a regularly gigging jazz singer/songwriter, I believe absolutely in maintaining solid vocal technique no matter what style of music speaks to you.
Designed for your specific needs
I work with all ages, across genres (classical, jazz, musical theater, pop.)
For teens to adults, focus is on technique, alignment, breath, tone & musicality, and can also include music theory / ear training, depending on your level. We determine goals together - from acing a high school or college audition, to working up new repertoire for professional gigs, to getting up on karaoke night with confidence.
When I work with younger children, fostering a love of music and song is my main focus. In addition to establishing a basic warm up (as an introduction to what will come when voices mature), we choose songs, develop musicality and musical literacy, have fun with ear training and other "games," and work on performing with confidence.
I have a BA in Voice Performance from Boston University (Trustee Scholar) and am a graduate of the Neighborhood Playhouse School of the Theater; over the years, I have had the great opportunity to study singing and acting with renowned teachers, including Richard Cassilly, Carolann Page and Wynn Handman currently study with Aaron Hagan, who has worked with the likes of Ariana Grande, Meghan Trainor and Gavin Creel. In addition to teaching privately, I teach vocal tech, musical theater, and audition drills at the Neighborhood Playhouse Junior School; I also had 3 fun-filled years directing Central Park East II's after-school choir program, while my kids attended elementary school there.

“Kate's easygoing, personable manner matched by her vast musicianship and theatrical background make her a great voice teacher. She gave our eleven year-old son several voice lessons to prep him for a role in his school musical - her passion for teaching and her love of many varieties of music endeared her to our son.
Kate's sunny smile and upbeat personality always brightened our day and we loved having her come to our home to teach. We will continue lessons with Kate as she gave our son the confidence, and the skills to perform. He won the award for best actor in a musical at his school and Kate's tutelage was a factor in his success. ”

"I found myself in the tough position of needing to give a eulogy and sing a song at the memorial service for a very dear friend who had passed away. Although I enjoy singing “in the shower,” I’m not a singer and was somewhat daunted by the prospect of singing my way through such a sad occasion. I wasn’t sure I had the “technical skills” to fall back on, in order to sing in such an emotional state. But I wanted to honor my friend in this special way. So, I connected with Kate Chaston for some coaching and pointers...She was literally “instrumental,” from her suggestion to purchase a small keyboard to maintain my pitch, to visiting my home to work with me personally, not to mention her compassion and patience with me when I burst out in tears mid-song. She is not only a talented musician, singer and teacher, but she is also a compassionate and kind person.
She was a pleasure to get to know, and she helped me to prepare for my eulogy song; I was so happy to be able to honor my dear friend with my song!"
